Distracted
I’m a bad, bad blogger. I’ve been neglecting this site for a few weeks now. There are comments from three days ago I haven’t even read yet. I’m sorry about that, but it’s going to be like this for a while.
My grandmother’s illness and death are partially to blame, but there’s a lot more to it. Luckily, the rest of it is good news. My whole life about to change. I’m moving to a new state in May, and I’m in the process of starting up a new business. The only things staying the same are my wife and my dog. I mentioned my wife there. Did you catch that Social Scientist?
For me, this means a hell of a lot of work for the next two and a half months. For you, this means sporadic blogging. I’ll make every effort to at least keep the Calendar of Credulity series going. Aside from that, I’ll probably only post if I’m really moved to do so. You know, like if the pope comes out of the closet. I’d definitely take a few minutes to pound out some thoughts on that one.
I also want to talk about how all this will change the blog. I am moving from New York City to Colorado. I’m leaving the hard blue shell of America behind and diving into the creamy, red center. In short, I’m going behind enemy lines. Now I’m not trying to say that Colorado is like Alabama or anything, but I’ll tell you one thing for sure. It ain’t New York. Focus on the Family and a number of other religious groups are headquartered in Colorado Springs. There are parts of downtown Denver that could make you feel like you’re in the Village if you could stop noticing how clean everything is, but downtown Denver’s not that big and not where I’ll be living.
Can a New York boy make it in red America?
Will he get to personally kick James Dobson in the nuts, fulfilling a lifelong dream?
Stay tuned. We’ll find out together.

Despite the xians, Colorado is a beautiful state. However, it will take some getting used to, if you ever do…people-wise anyway. My husband and i had to live in ARKANSAS for two years when we were first married. He was in the Air Force at the time. I couldn’t stand it with all the Bubbas and the Billy-Bobs and Boss Hog cops, etc. Everyone had a gun rack in the back window of their pick-up trucks! When we moved back to Chicago I could have kissed the dirty sidewalks!
Best wishes and hope all goes well for you with the new business.

Good luck to you with all the upcoming changes in your life. We’ll miss you back here!
I’ve lived in New York my whole life, save the 3 years I was in Wisconsin. But, I don’t think that really compares to Colorado. Wisconsin is a pretty progressive state; my former congresswoman, Tammy Baldwin, is a lesbian liberal [to her credit]!
However, I think it’s probably good when Blue Staters move into the Red States. More D votes among the sea of R’s. Just a couple of flips and we might get the Republicans out of the White House yet. I’m a libertarian, but I lean left rather than right. So, I very much identify with that Blue label.

If it drives you crazy too much, just hop on a plane and two hours later you are in San Francisco for a breather.

As a Denver-ite, I can assure you Colorado is an amazing place to live. It’s far too gorgeous and there’s too much going on if you like the outdoors to really concern yourself with politics all that much. At least that’s been my experience here. Good luck with the move!

Oh please, please, kick James Dobson in the nuts. And get some video of it. You need to do a “run-by kicking”, like something from MTV’s jackass, and have your buddy stealthily hidden behind a car taping the whole thing, including the five minutes of him writhing on the ground.
Ok, ok, it’s not ethical…why do we always have to take the moral high ground over Xians?
March 31st, 2006 at at 6:30 am
Yeah, you’d better watch out for those bears. They’re the number one threat to American freedom.

as another Denver-ite, welcome! It’s always good to see the god-free population here increasing! I moved here from Montana 15 years and love it here! Your dog will enjoy it too-Denver has one of the highest dog-per-person ratios in the country, and a few years ago we managed to open up a few leash-free areas in Denver parks.

You might find this surpising, but there are actually more religious dropouts (i.e., people who left religious groups and now claim no affiliation) in Colorado and the Mountain states than there are in the Northeast. There are even more on the Pacific coast. Also, it’s beautiful - I grew up in, where else, Utah, but have spent some time in Colorado as well. So, even though the religion is more likely to be worn on one’s sleeve, there is actually less of it in Colorado than there is in the Northeast (New York City is likely an exception).

Fantastic, this will make it easier to plan the First Annual EA Ski Trip!

You mean to tell me you have an actual, real, honest-to-goodness life outside the blogosphere?
BOLLOCKS!
Wife, Dog, Job, entirely new life in an entirely new state, blah blah blah. You know darn well that blogging should come FIRST! Remember the oath you took? “Till death do I blog!” ???
Seriously I AM, I want to congratulate you. You are about 2 time zones closer to the West Coast. California Love! I hope you have a smooth transition, and that your business ventures are highly lucrative.
Im curious to know how much different the religious climate is in Colorado compared to New York? Keep us informed on all the details whenever time permits.
Shit, even with your busy schedule you STILL blog more than I do. Im struggling to post twice a week, and usually I only post once a week. Its hard for me to find things worth posting about because so many other great atheist bloggers beat me to the punch hehe.

Speaking from experience, Colorado seems to be less religious than most places. You rarely hear about here, other than the shenanigans down in Co Springs. There’s a blogger who lives there, though, who says that he lives in the most liberal neighborhood he’s ever lived in. His blog is at: http://nonprophet.typepad.com
Also of note: evolvefish.com is based there
I’ve been here 15 years, and I don’t actually recall ever being asked which church I go to or what religion I am. It could just be my sphere of existence, but pretty much everyone I know finds the religious right to be pretty nutty, even those who go to church regularly.

hahaha “or eaten by a Christian”
I hope everything works out for ya!

The only way that rational thought will be introduced to the “Focus on the Family” crowd is for rational agents to “Go out among the wolves” and spread the word. Join a church and weekly point out how naive the arguments are.
1. You care about humanity.
2. Education is the only way that mysticism can be cured.
Good luck, the Rocky Mountains are worth the move.

Couldn’t resist telling everybody about it. It’s entertaining unlike this blog.

Colorado is a beautiful state. I lived there for 5 years before moving to Ohio (2 years ago). My husband loved it (he lived there for about 12 years) and I hated it. We lived in Colorado Springs, and it is very conservative. The religion is overwhelming there - from the people you run into at the store to the people that you work with. My husband actually worked with FOTF (he is a computer dork). They had ARMED guards right after 9/11!! There are some more “blue” areas of the town, but only a few. I didn’t spend too much time in Denver so I couldn’t comment on it…
I don’t know exactly where you’ll be living, but that’s my experience.
Make sure you head out to the western part of the state once in a while. It’s beautiful!!

I am,
you still remember the gay thing yikes! If it is any consolation your personality did not seem to match the gay thing, I had to change my whole concept of who I imagined you were including the picture in my mind of a rugged atheist, to accept the possibility of believing you might be gay. I was stunned the first time I read it and felt the image of you in my mind disolving and trying to fit a gay image to your personality, it just didn’t fit the image you portray somehow.
Good luck in Colorado,
Fay

We at “The Gods Are Bored” don’t necessarily endorse nut-kicking, but in special cases we will be otherwise occupied while said kicking occurs. Your suggestion definitely falls into that category.

I hope you’ve all seen my compilation of quotations from the sickest and most depraved piece of pornography in history! Rape, murder, human sacrifice, genocide, incest, wholesale slaughter and human degradation of all kinds… a comprehensive selection of quotes from the best selling book of all time! Excellent resource - share these with everyone you know!

You have a very interesting site. Are you up for debate? I haven’t talked to a good Atheist for a few years.
In umbra,
Elijah
ps. Colorado is one of the fastest growing Catholic communities in the world. A storm is coming.
April 11th, 2006 at at 12:02 pm
Elijah,
From what priests are saying, there arent any “growing” catholic communities in America. The growing ones are all in Africa. Do you have any figures or articles where Colorado priests are celebrating increased worship attendance and overflowing collection plates?
April 11th, 2006 at at 3:17 pm
I thought Colorado Springs was infested with Protestant nuts like Dobson.
April 15th, 2006 at at 5:32 am
Tell me, what good would be achieved by turning Christians away from their belief in God? What benefit would come to society by achieving that? I mean really what do you hope to gain by that?
April 15th, 2006 at at 7:29 pm
Tell me, what good would be achieved by telling children that there is no Santa Claus? What benefit would come to society as a result of their disillusionment? If they want to live in a world where fat men fit down chimneys, and monsters hide under the bed, and authority figures that are really bullshit artists tell tham what to think and do, what’s wrong with that?
Good luck I Am. I look forward to your return to the blogosphere. If there is anything I can do to help out, or to shamelessly exploit you in your new venture, let me know.

Its been 18 days now since a post. I AM is posting almost as infrequently as I do now! What gives?
Remember, real-life obligations like family, job, moving, and such are NO EXCUSE for not entertaining your internet atheist readers!
April 18th, 2006 at at 1:12 pm
And no calendar series either. Sheesh!
