GOD or NOT #5: Spiritual Beings
GOD or NOT #5 is up at Amaranthine Acatalepsy. Go check it out, and don’t forget to leave some feedback for the contributors.
GOD or NOT #6 (Scriptural Literalism) will be held on January 16 at Back of the Envelope. Submissions are now being accepted.
By the way, if any of you have any feedback on why we’re having so much trouble eliciting theist submissions, please comment on this post or email me about it.

could it be that theists are afraid that us evil baby-eating atheists will come to their blogs and disagree with them? perhaps it will just take time for them to get used to the idea of a God or Not carnival. I think getting the theists who are already involved to promote the carnival even more might help.

Maybe theists don’t respond because their claims are rationally indefensible?
Perhaps you could offer a category that caters to their epistemological requirements, such as the cathartic function of grilled cheese images or my prophetic pup and other dyslexic metaphysical conundra.

This is insane the so-called carnival (truly meat venomous) of the God or not REFUSED my precious article of faith and exegete and holiness on account of conspo with Illuminauts and Vatirats and assorted baddies and sickos. Truly there is effort on the part of ROK and USA and KKKANADA to silence my precious gospel. I reveal for first time Hierarch and location of angels and beings! This is high holiness, brethren!
Peace unto all nations, and unto all nations, death.

At first glance, that seems like a joke. But after reading the linked blog, I am seriously confused.
…it’s amazing how so many of life’s problems can be solved by something as simple as a shotgun.

He heh… during one of my battles with Tremblay, I ran into that the Hashishan Prophet. Yeah, I thought it was a joke too then I steadily lost more and more faith in humanity.
he heh.
‘lost faith.’

Perhaps it’s simply that atheist blogs would naturally have an interest in the question of the existence of god, whereas theist blogs would have more interest in questions of the nature or features of a god assumed to exist. Eternal Revolution helped start the carnival yet how many posts there tend to be about whether there is a god? I would guess it’s simply a more basic issue than most theist bloggers are interested in.
Incidentally, is it just me, or is hashishan’s prose improving?

Sara, I grieve with you. My submission was not included because the host misinterpreted the topic, confining it to ghosts. Next time, perhaps.

I thought I was having a “God or Not” conversation with my xian wife tonight at dinner in our favorite Mexican restaurant when I was explaining that 11 year old girls don’t really exercise their “free will” while they are being kidnapped, raped, and murdered. My wife’s response was to throw up, literally. Was that a victory for “Not” or “God” or Mexico?

I don’t pretend to speak for any other theists, but I can say that personally I have little or nothing to say about ghosts and other assorted spiritual beings. That’s not to say it’s not an interesting topic, but it is a conversation to which I have really nothing to add. Perhaps some others feel the same way. I’m all over this next carnival’s topic though (scriptural literalism).
Personally I would love you atheists to bring your dissenting, twisted opinions over to my blog. I have no fear of ‘you people’. Bring it on!

Chad,
The topic of this last carnival was “spiritual beings,” not just ghosts. Many theists believe they are spiritual beings, i.e. that they have a soul. I would think that would be of interest to many theists. That was what I wrote about.

If you want to elicit more submissions, theist or otherwise, you need more exposure for the carnival. This is the first I have heard of it.
List your carnival at the biggest carnival sites like http://www.conservativecat.com/Ferdy/Carnivals.htm
and at the TTLB carnival list http://www.truthlaidbear.com/ubercarnival.php
Both of those, while mostly conservative, list everyone entering thier info regardless of perspective.

I agree. HP is becoming easier to read. I’m not sure that’s a good thing.
Uberkuh:
That is unfortunate. However, to quote Sara, truly meat venomous. What more need be said?
tomWright:
Thank you. Those are excellent suggestions.

I tried really hard to come up with something interesting for this carnival, but all I kept thinking was “ghosts, angels, wishful thinking, end of post.” This didn’t seem like a very good post so eventually I gave up.
Like someone else said, I think theists place the existence of God, and therefore all of the various parts associated with that, as a foregone conclusion. Therefore, what is there to discuss
I hate to give undue credit to the recent arguments here and elsewhere, but one thing that demonstrated is that controversy does generate interest. Currently, God or Not is not very controversial. No one wants it to deteriorate into a flame war, but a little more righteous fury might whip up some theistic participation.
I also agree that the carnival needs more promotion. Right now, I think allot of people consider God or Not as just an atheist carnival and not as an ecumenical enterprise. Getting the word out to more theists might help. Perhaps, some controversial ads, distributed where possible, could generate interest. Might be time for another contest for the best controversial God or Not ad.

If you really want theist comments and debates, it is much better to post your opinions on theist’s sites. My personal experience in posting atheistic comments on a theistic site generated a great number of responses. Unfortunately, however, the existence of any intelligent discussion never materilized.

How well advertised are we on theist blogs? That might be a problem.
