I would submit rather that the converse is the truth, "America hates God" and the proof is in the pudding. Do we keep His moral laws? Do love our nieghbor as ourself? God is a God of justice. We're the only haters around here.

Ed: I for 1 know that Phelps isn't representative of anyone's faith but his own. He's a screecher preacher, best relegated to the Dark Ages that spawned him.
Um, you're not Ed from the NoGodBlog, are you?
If not, sorry.

I live in Lawrence, and work in Topeka. I am a government scientist, and I get literally 3-5 faxes every day from Fred that I cannot stop (the law requires me to have my fax machine available to the public, though he is literally the only person not business-related from whom I receive faxes).

To be fair, Phelps's "chuch" is only a large house that has a large iron gate around it, and they do not hold services there. Their entire "worship" consists of going out and protesting anyone and everyone they perceive as supporting Jews... er, Gays. Or whatever minority group we're hating this week in the name of our gods. I get confused so quickly.

I AM - I am fine with you putting posts up about nut jobs. I just don't think it is very productive if you are looking to critigue faith, but it is damn entertaining. I do think the opening of this discussion has been very good, and I am grateful for your efforts in it. Bringing guys like Phelps into the discussion is self-defeating to that effort. I will reserve my blog reading to GodorNot from now on, since this is may not be the best forum to discuss.

For more fun religious nut jobs I think you would all enjoy:

www.wittenburgdoor.com

It is a religious satire magazine. It is run by believers who gladly make fun of the wackos who use religion to manipulate others and serve their own selfish desires. You will probably find some good targets that you are not even aware of. We Christians know our own nuts better than anyone.

I think I am free to make judgements upon Phelps' actions and declare him to be out of line with the faith, particularly because he claims to be a religious leader. If you read the Gospels, you will see that Christ was the harshest of critics towards the religious leaders of his day. The Bible states that expectations are higher for religious leaders and they will be held highly accountable for misleading people. I think Phelps has a lot to answer for. I do still believe that redemption might be possible for him, but I am afraid that I can't really see it happening given his overwhelming narrow-mindedness and self-justification.

Ugh. Phelps is just absolutely insane. The guy is a grade-A sociopath. He's hatred shaped like a man. Did anyone else read his Wikipedia page? I know I had trouble not throwing up by the end of it. If God esisted, he would have been eaten by a pteradactyl long ago.
