God Hates America

The folks at Westboro Baptist Church are on our side against the pledge of allegiance. The United States couldn’t possibly be one nation under god, because god hates America.

Before I even begin to talk about this, let me give you a taste.

Thank God for Katrina. New Orleans, symbol of America, seen for what it is: a putrid, toxic, stinking cesspool of fag fecal matter.

Thank God for IEDs killing American soldiers in strange lands every day. WBC rejoices every time the Lord God in His vengeance kills or maims an American soldier with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Pope John Paul II, the Great Pedophile Pope, is in hell. No burning candles, no indulgences, and no prayers to Mary will change that. The new Pope Benedict, Pope of the Great Whore, will burn in hell with him shortly.

God destroyed the WTC to punish America! Deal with it! Bloody butcher Bush thinks he can distract from these facts by taking over Babylon with his fag army.

Pastor and cult leader of this Kansas church, Fred Phelps, is undoubtedly one of the most hateful human beings in the country. This certainly isn’t news. He has been spewing his disgusting beliefs since the 1940s. In addition to God Hates America, he is responsible for the infamous godhatesfags.com, which serves as the homepage for his “church.”

Phelps is, of course, justified in his position as a symbol of god’s Old Testament brand of love. There is strong evidence that he abused his wife and children. He has been arrested no less than ten times in the United States. He can no longer enter Canada, because he would be arrested and tried under Canadian hate crime laws. He has long been a champion of political leaders who hold similar ideals. Fidel Castro and Saddam Hussein are just a couple of his favorites. George W. Bush, however, America’s Theocrat-in-Chief, is not on his list of heroes, as you may have gleaned from the above quote.

There is some good news. It is believed that Phelps is suffering from advanced liver cancer or Parkinson’s disease. Some think he may have suffered a mild stroke. He’ll probably be dead soon, but we can hold out hope that he’ll suffer for years, yet. Phelps is proof of one thing. Jesus either wasn’t god or doesn’t have a sense of humor, because if both of those things were true, Fred Phelps would have leprosy.

Mr. Phelps should wake up every day and thank his god that he’s in the United States. In most countries of the world, he would have been imprisoned or executed as a traitor long ago.

When I talk about my desire to wipe religion out completely, I’m always challenged by some mainline Protestant who wouldn’t hurt a fly and can’t understand why I’m not content to let him live his faith in peace. On those occasions, I always say the same thing. Even the most harmless religion can and will mutate into something dangerous and hateful. Godhatesamerica.com is my new favorite example.

“We aren’t associated with any violent group of degenerates that thinks killing people is a good thing.”

“Thank God for IEDs killing American soldiers in strange lands every day.”

Not only is he sick he is also delusional.

I would go one step further. If Jesus had a sense of humor this guy would get raped repeatedly by the Village People.

  2. Mookie Says:

The guy is probably a closet homosexual. He was raised with a human-hating religion, and so really hates himself. But this self-hate isn’t good enough, he has to hate as many people as possible. Why? That’s how religion spreads. The meme must convince people to hate themselves, to make them think they have a problem, like being gay, or female, or non-white. What’s really sickening is that it actually works, warping the minds of millions into little hate machines. Fear, hate, anger, aggression, these nasty emotions that disrupt our society every day are the very foundation of the belief in the supernatural, and the adherence to a strict, dogmatic doctrine.

  3. Delta Says:

THANK GOD FOR ALL DEAD SWEDES!!!

We stand on, drag, spit upon, etc. the flag because it is a symbol not of America, but of fagdom.

What a sick fuck. In 2006 he’s going to California to protest a “Fag Prom planned by GSA of Tracy and West High Schools”. If only I could hurt people with my mind damnit!

  4. boywonder Says:

    Excellent observation Mookie.

I’d like to see someone start a godhatesphelps site.

  5. franky Says:

Wow, what a sick fuck. Any idea how many members is in his cult?

  7. DUB Says:

Notice, that he has scripture to back up every one of his sickening proclamations.

I see nothing spectacular in him or his beliefs except that he publically voices them. Well, maybe it is novel to see a raging, homophobic, hateful, Protestant Christian who isn’t ultra (America, fuck yeah!) patriotic, but I’ve heard more than a handfull preaching God’s vengenance on America. Funny how God wasn’t so pissed at us when we were building our economy on the back’s of slaves and denying women the right to be anything other than baby-machines. Nope, he’s just pissed at us during our government’s most overtly religious era since independence.

Phelps has really overlooked that plank in his eye.

  8. rmadison Says:

I live in Kansas City, which is only an hour east of Topeka. Here, as there, Phelps is largely ignored.

Even when they picket funerals at Ft. Riley & Ft. Leavenworth of soldiers who have recently died in Iraq. Their picket signs usually say, “[insert soldier’s name here] is in HELL!!!”

Everybody knows he’s a nut. From what I can gather, most of his followers are family members.

(As an interesting side note, I think I recall hearing that Phelps used to be an attorney for the ACLU in Topeka.)

I think I may make my own picket sign for Phelps. It’ll say, “God is just a word”

  9. Ron Says:

rmadison: as a theist, I couldn’t agree with you more!
(how many nominal theists will jump on me, I wonder….)

Of course, once something is predicated of God, he becomes that something more… (maybe that’ll keep the nominalists off my back, eh?)

  10. Aaron Kinney Says:

Yes I think Phelps congregation is pretty much just his family. Hes a nutjob. His hate comes from within, which obviously means that he hates himself first and foremost.

Mookie, you have articulated so well what I have been grasping at for some time. Most of the xtians I know are good people. They go to church, they don’t bother anyone, they do not wear their religion on their sleeves. So what harm is it? I have an answer now. Thank you.

  12. Ed - Says:

Well. I am a Christian, and I hate the wrong reverend Phelps as much as you guys do. Perhaps more, since he tries to claim allegiance with my faith. I want to declare now that everything I know from my faith tells me that Phelps is not a Christian. His actions and words indicate that God is not truly part of his life. I am disappointed with any believer who would somehow try to call him a “brother” or at all agree with his views.

As with any nut job, he tries to find justification for his whacked out views to hide the fact that he is simply a nut. The root of his hate is not religion. It is himself. I know you all see the chicken and the egg the other way, believing that man is not inherently flawed and religion creates the hate. However, my faith tells me that his hate is rooted in his character and his experience, and unfortunately he has co-opted religion to justify himself.

You can keep beating on your straw man of faith, Phelps being perhaps the easiest target (he deserves a good beating), but the great majority of Christians do not see their faith portrayed in any way by that guy. We choose to ignore him.

I hope to not be creating or only picking on the straw man of your views, and I would hope you all could afford Christians the same courtesy.

  13. I Am Says:

    Ed:
If I read the phrase “straw man” one more time, I’m going to scream.

I’m the only atheist blogger who’s really doing anything proactive to open lines of communication between atheists and Christians. I want to talk to the reasonable Christians, but don’t tell me I can’t post about the nut jobs.

  14. addict_no_more Says:

Ed, I didn’t think you were allowed to hate anyone, as a Christian. Aren’t you judging Phelps? Isn’t that god’s job? Just curious.

The reason religion cannot exist peacefully is that there will always be a Phelps, and plenty others like him. They “ruin” religion for the ones who don’t bastardize it and manipulate it, assuming you believe that’s possible - and I don’t think I do. Religion is one great, big manipulation and method of control to begin with… but some “good”, innocent and relatively honest people do believe. It’s just not possible to eliminate the nut jobs.

I second cubic rooms… Mookie, well said.

  15. Tanooki Joe Says:

Ugh. Phelps is just absolutely insane. The guy is a grade-A sociopath. He’s hatred shaped like a man. Did anyone else read his Wikipedia page? I know I had trouble not throwing up by the end of it. If God esisted, he would have been eaten by a pteradactyl long ago.

  16. Ed - Says:

I AM - I am fine with you putting posts up about nut jobs. I just don’t think it is very productive if you are looking to critigue faith, but it is damn entertaining. I do think the opening of this discussion has been very good, and I am grateful for your efforts in it. Bringing guys like Phelps into the discussion is self-defeating to that effort. I will reserve my blog reading to GodorNot from now on, since this is may not be the best forum to discuss.

For more fun religious nut jobs I think you would all enjoy:

It is a religious satire magazine. It is run by believers who gladly make fun of the wackos who use religion to manipulate others and serve their own selfish desires. You will probably find some good targets that you are not even aware of. We Christians know our own nuts better than anyone.

I think I am free to make judgements upon Phelps’ actions and declare him to be out of line with the faith, particularly because he claims to be a religious leader. If you read the Gospels, you will see that Christ was the harshest of critics towards the religious leaders of his day. The Bible states that expectations are higher for religious leaders and they will be held highly accountable for misleading people. I think Phelps has a lot to answer for. I do still believe that redemption might be possible for him, but I am afraid that I can’t really see it happening given his overwhelming narrow-mindedness and self-justification.

  17. UnapologeticAtheist Says:

I live in Lawrence, and work in Topeka. I am a government scientist, and I get literally 3-5 faxes every day from Fred that I cannot stop (the law requires me to have my fax machine available to the public, though he is literally the only person not business-related from whom I receive faxes).

To be fair, Phelps’s “chuch” is only a large house that has a large iron gate around it, and they do not hold services there. Their entire “worship” consists of going out and protesting anyone and everyone they perceive as supporting Jews… er, Gays. Or whatever minority group we’re hating this week in the name of our gods. I get confused so quickly.

  18. Reluctant Atheist Says:

Ed: I for 1 know that Phelps isn’t representative of anyone’s faith but his own. He’s a screecher preacher, best relegated to the Dark Ages that spawned him.
Um, you’re not Ed from the NoGodBlog, are you?
    If not, sorry.

  19. Dennis H Says:

I would submit rather that the converse is the truth, “America hates God” and the proof is in the pudding. Do we keep His moral laws? Do love our nieghbor as ourself? God is a God of justice. We’re the only haters around here.
