Carnival of the Godless XIX
Ladies and Gentlemen! Disbelievers of All Ages! Welcome the 19th Carnival of the Godless, brought to you by Unscrewing the Inscrutable. We have an astounding assortment of amazing amusements for you this week, so please pull down the safety harness, and keep your hands in the car at all times.
Our Doors Are Always Open
First off, in a position of honor, we have the originator of COTG, Brent Rasmussen from Unscrewing the Inscrutable. Brent shares a significant tale from his Mormon youth and discusses how it opened his eyes to new truths about his religion.
In the Name of God
I’m not sure if I’m allowed to include this, since it’s not from a blog, but it was submitted. There are no rules at carnival time, right? Polly Toynbee of The Guardian published a marvelous editorial in response to the terror attacks in London, calling for the removal of religion from public life.
In the Name of God…
No, that’s not a mistake. We have two items with the same title. This one is by Seth at Spoiled Honey. A quiet discussion about religion turns into a raucous classroom shouting match in this glimpse into the life of a 13 year old atheist.
The Catholic Church in Nazi Germany
Austin Cline, the atheism guide at About.com, shares passages from Pope Benedict XVI: A Biography of Joseph Ratzinger by John L. Allen, Jr.. The piece discusses the role the church played in enabling and assisting the Nazis during the holocaust.
Atheism and Evolution
Aaron Boyden from Neurath’s Boat evaluates the claim made by some that evolution has nothing to do with religion.
Growing Up in Houston…
There is no link directly to this post. You’ll have to scroll down to July 1. It’s worth the effort. Hank Fox, a master of metaphor, talks about a new dark age of animosity toward intellectualism that is rapidly coming about in the United States today.
A Look at Pantheism
Guide to Reality’s Steve Esser evaluates pantheism as an alternative worldview that may address the criticisms of both theism and atheism.
Theo Van Gogh Was No “Critic of Islam”
John B. of The Sharpener offers a scathing criticism of this Dutch filmmaker who was murdered by a Muslim who was angered by his work. It offers a very different perspective from what you might have seen in the mainstream media.
What ID and New Coke Have in Common
Is Intelligent Design a dying fad? Is classic creationism returning to the forefront? These are the predictions made by Pat Hayes at Red State Rabble.
Blind Faith - It’s Not Just for God - A Polemic
A Rational Being compares religious fervor to unquestioning patriotism and other forms of blind faith, looking at the source and results of this phenomenon.
Am I Jealous of Christians?
Shirley Setterbo at Atheist Exposed, a newcomer to godless blogging, offers an honest look at the benefits of being Christian and examines her feelings isolation as an atheist.
The next Carnival of the Godless will be held at Silly Humans on August 7th. Get your submissions in early.
For those of you who follow this blog, the “God is a Dick” series will return next Sunday.

calling for the removal of religion from public life.
I loved that piece! It didn’t get enough attention from the media though.

65 new visitors so far today. But strangely, no comments…
You folks are awesome.
FYI, I started a diary at dKos that points to COTG. Received a couple of positive comments. My Diaries at dKos, you guessed it, “A Rational Being”
If you are looking for a future host for COTG, don’t hesitate to ask.

Er, all the links are to the whole blog, not specific posts.
Real problem there.
July 31st, 2005 at at 8:05 pm
Eh, you must be clicking on the links within each paragraph, not the titles. Either that or you are using some crazy definition of “all”.
July 31st, 2005 at at 8:05 pm
Chris:
The links are fine. I just checked them. Maybe you’re clicking on the blog links instead of the post titles.
July 31st, 2005 at at 8:12 pm
D’oh. I Am solved my problem. Thanks.

Big Tent
Pat Hayes at Red State Rabble has an interesting essay on the likely fate of the Intelligent Design movement. The problems with the ‘big tent’ of ID theory have been obvious for some time - in order to pretend it’s anything other tha…
